The Worst-kept Secret in Golf

Long hitters have always been admired in this game, and ever since the game has been played, golfers have been bouncing around from one tip to another, trying to find the magic formula that unlocks the latent power in their swing and sends the ball disappearing over the horizon and off into the great blue yonder. You’ve heard them all before: the big shoulder turn; firing the hips; the late hit; chasing down the line…Sound familiar? I could go on but we’d be here all day.

Yet the funny thing is, the secret to hitting the golf ball a long way really isn’t a secret at all. It’s simply a matter of miles per hour. If two golfers use the same golf ball and club and make contact on the same spot on the clubface and at the same launch angle, then the one with the faster clubhead speed will hit it further.

All other things being equal, clubhead speed is directly proportional to carry distance.

The question then – and what every golfer wants to know – is how can THEY increase their clubhead speed by a significant amount. And that’s what I would like to help you with on this website.

The Game is Changing and Long Hitting is Here to Stay

Before we start, let’s consider how the game has changed over the last 20-30 years. Long hitting has become the topic dominating the conversation in golf today because of the eye-popping distances being achieved off the tee by players like Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, and Jon Rahm. Not to mention long-drive champions like Kyle Berkshire, Justin James, and Martin Borgmeier. And indeed, by the longest hitters on the LPGA Tour as well.

DeChambeau transformed himself into the Incredible Hulk, crossed over and competed in the World Long Drive Championships, and won the US Open in 2020 on top of it. And – Stop press – he just shot 58 last week!

McIlroy cranks it out there about 325 yards on average without even breaking a sweat.

And Long Drive #1 Kyle Berkshire regularly blasts it over 400 yards!

Even when Matt Fitzpatrick won the US Open in 2022, it seemed like all the golf analysts wanted to talk about was not how well he played coming down the stretch but how much swing speed he had gained.

To show you how dramatic the change has been, back in 2000 only one PGA Tour player – John Daly – averaged more than 300 yards off the tee. As I write this today, that figure has risen to ninety-five players! And the Top 10 players in driving distance on the LPGA Tour – including players like Xiaowen Yin, Yuka Saso, Magdelena Sagstrom, and Maria Fassi – are all hitting the ball farther today than the average men’s driving distance was on the PGA Tour in that same year of 2000 (273 yards).

And here’s another fun fact: when Corey Pavin won the US Open at Shinnecock Hills in 1995, his average driving distance for the season was 255 yards. Today, the top 100 women in the driving distance stats on the LPGA Tour hit it farther than that!

Even on the PGA Tour Champions, players are maintaining their length or even getting longer in their 50s and 60s. For example, when Padraig Harrington won his first Open Championship back in 2007, his season’s average was 293 yards off the tee. However, 5 years later, in 2013, he had fallen back to 288 yards. Age catching up with him, you might say. Yet, today, 10 years further down the line and now a Senior, he is averaging 302 yards – a gain of 14 yards! In fact, last year he was like a kid with a new toy all season, swishing his training device left and right, talking non-stop about ball speeds, and telling everyone within earshot, “It’s all about 180, guys!” So don’t be surprised if there’s even more to come from Paddy.

About Swing Speed Training

The constant focus on distance in TV coverage of professional tournaments means that golfers everywhere are becoming familiar with ball and clubhead speeds, smash factors, launch angles, and all the other terminology, and are curious to know “what’s in it for them”.

And many are hearing about weight training, resistance band training, dumbbell and kettlebell training, overspeed training, and plyometrics and are wondering where to start.

You see, I first got interested in golf swing speeds and trying to hit the ball longer when I read an extremely dense academic tome called “The Physics of Ball Games” by CB Daish about 30 years ago. The book itself had been published as far back as 1972 and was filled with complicated equations about the mechanics of power generation during the golf swing, the forces operating on the golf ball at impact, and the aerodynamics of the golf ball in flight. It was certainly not for the faint-hearted, and in fact, only a physicist or a mechanical engineer could love it. But what little of it I understood appealed to my analytical nature and got me thinking.

A couple of years later I met a guy who was even more obsessed about the game of golf than I was and together, we started exploring the science of long hitting and training for it on a more serious basis. You can read about our story on this page.

Long story short, how I wish we had available to us back then what all of us have at our fingertips today. When we started, it was a long, hard struggle to find any information at all on swing speed training, whereas today we are awash with information…though not all of it can readily be believed. And training aids were virtually non-existent.
